The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
