The Top Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Position.

Initially, this album could seem closer to an arduous scholarly challenge than a new popular music project from a musician who just had a last single featured an international pop star. Broken into four different movements and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a dizzying classical-tinged work investigating female mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, often via the prism of different female saints. The end of a romance—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward on this record, carried by the constant presence of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among a vast list of contributors. The pure audacity alone renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear rather small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape overly intellectual chin-stroking feels nearly miraculous, and full credit going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds and the present, its ambitions feel much greater here, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that truly elevates her fourth album, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Much like the legendary Björk at her height, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts in two, you still desire to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines brightly during the stunning piano-led ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in with cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic with this album lies in you rarely quite know—nor want to know—where it will go next."

Nearly every track concludes at a completely different point from where it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of fame with a delicate symphony before collapsing into electronic chaos. Another, a cut echoing her previous trap-infused work begins off moody and brooding, with prowling beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment & Pop

A key achievement on the album is straddling the line between radical experimentation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy hits. One track performed entirely in English swells on a refrain that seems to collect more and more infectious hooks as it spins skyward. That trick gets repeated on another expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for high artistry in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism for sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its own built-in excess. It is a deep well of buried gems that requires patience to completely explore but never seem like hard work. Where other big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish feast where the guests around the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
